Medals galore for Elgin Athletics Club youngsters at national competitions

ELGIN Amateur Athletics Club have collected a series of medals at recent national athletics competitions.

The club attended Scottish Athletics' under-17 championships on August 13 and 14, with 14 athletes taking home four medals.

Those medals were added to at the Scottish Age Group Championships, which took place in Grangemouth on August 27 and 28.

A whopping 18 athletes travelled to the central belt to compete in the championships – taking home 10 medals and smashing five club records.

"It was a really successful weekend, with 50 performances returning 18 personal bests, five club records, two golds, two silvers and six bronze medals for Elgin athletes," a club spokesperson said.

"A brilliant time was had by all attending the Under-17 Age Group Championships, too. Eight of our 14 athletes were running up an age group and really held their own."

Medals in Aberdeen were picked up by Lauren Abbott, who got silver in the under-15 girls 300 metres, Lexi Grant, who achieved bronze in the under-15 girls triple jump, and Tom Palmer – who got two bronze medals at under-17 boys in 100 metre and 400 metre hurdles.

Lexi also achieved a new personal best (PB) in the 80 metre hurdles, breaking the under-15 girls club record in the process.

Elsewhere, there were personal bests for Anna Reid, Holly Whittaker, Ava Cruickshank and Iris Whitton in the 100 metres. Evie Collins set new PBs in 800 metres and triple jump.

Roy Taylor competed in 1500m at under-17 boys and made it through to the final as the top qualifier, smashing his PB and improving his own club record by seven seconds.

Two weeks later in Grangemouth, the club won even more medals at the Scottish Age Group Championships. Athletes were competing at under-13, 15, 17 and 20 levels.

Lauren Abbott won gold in the under-15 girls 300 metres, with Lexi Grant picking up two medals in the same age category – silver in the triple jump and bronze in the long jump, setting two PBs and improving a club record along the way.

Iris Whitton and Holly Whittaker also won bronze medals at under-15 girls, Iris in triple jump and Holly in 75 metre hurdles. Both set PBs.

Andrew Lumsden set a PB to win gold in the triple jump at under-15 level, while young Gemma Forgie won bronze in the 70 metre hurdles at under-13s.

Tom Palmer, who competed up an age group, set a best time to win silver in the 110 metre hurdles at under-17s, while Dean Murdoch won bronze in the under-20s shot put.

Amelie Anderson, competing in her maiden national competition, set new best times in the 100 metre and 800 metres.

Ava Cruickshank set PBs in 100 metres and javelin, while Ruaridh MacKenzie-Copp achieved PBs in discus and javelin.

At under-13 girl level, there were PBs for Jenna Gage in the 800 metres and Quentin Fowlie in the javelin.
