SEVEN Moravian Orienteers travelled to Ballater at the weekend to compete in a regional event on the very steep forested slopes across the river.

It turned out to be a bit of an epic with long courses and masses of climb in the forest, only to be replaced by deep heather when the slope eased off and the forest gave way to moorland.

The star of the weekend was undoubtedly 14-year-old Finlay McLuckie, who won his first ever brown course (the longest) and by the considerable margin of 20 minutes ahead of 16-year-old Michael Bishendon – a great double for Moravian.

Finlay’s sister Kate also had an excellent, run coming second in the blue (second longest) course, while Oonagh Grassie won the orange course.
