Moray and Banff referees climb the Scottish football ranks as hunt begins for more refs to join their local association

WANTED: Football referees in the Moray and Banffshire area to follow on the same path as local whistlers climbing the Scottish football ranks.
Moray and Banff Referee Association will host a new introductory course this week with the aim of recruiting some budding young refs, or former players keen to stay in the sport.
A number of recent additions to the Association have celebrated promotion up the levels this year.
Kevin Buchanan has moved up to Category 3 ref, meaning that as well as taking charge at Highland League matches he will be assisting at SPFL fixtures up to Championship level.
Colleague Rob Mackinnon has been promoted to Category 3 Development, having enjoyed his first major appointment as assistant referee at this season's North of Scotland Cup final between Rothes and Brora Rangers.
Two youngsters who came through Moray and Banff's introductory course have taken their bow at Highland League level.
Callum Shand ran the line at this month's Forres Mechanics v Brechin City match while Megan Mckay was one of the assistants at Mackessack Park when Rothes met Lossiemouth in a Moray derby.
Over the last week, two members from our recent Introductory courses took the next step and ticked off their debut in the Highland Football League.
"Having both hit the ground running, Callum and Megan have shown the possibilities that are available here in Moray and they have quickly developed into assistants in the HFL," said a Moray and Banff spokesperson.
The latest introductory session over Zoom takes place on Thursday this week at 7pm, for anyone aged 16 and over.
It will cover the Laws of The Game through a mix of presentations and videos with an exam at the end.
"The course will he led by our experienced members who will be on hand to help you through the course," said a group spokesperson.
"There's much more to refereeing than showing cards. Once you're through the course, you will be assigned a mentor, have opportunities to attend regular fitness training and will be provided coaching and meetings with fellow referees to guide you forward in your career.
"We also have a social committee for some days out and competitive matches against other associations.
"If you fancy trying something new, keeping yourself involved in football, staying fit or meeting new people then come and give it a go.
