THE Olympic dream could be alive for a pair of Moray wheelchair curlers, who have been shortlisted to take to the ice at the 2014 Paralympic Games.

Moray Wheelchair Curling Club members Gregor Ewan and Jim Gault have made it into the final eight pairs who are hoping to take the plane to Sochi, Russia, as part of the British team.

And with five pairs set to be selected, Ewan is hoping the two local men will be flying the flag for the UK in two years’ time.

Before that, however, the duo will be representing Scotland in mid-July at a summer bonspiel at Cape Cod in the USA. To help raise cash for that event, they have organised a street collection in Elgin on July 4.

It has been a successful 12 months so far for the curlers.

Ewan, of Conval Crescent in Dufftown, was chosen last December with club member Mike McKenzie to represent Scotland at the World Championships in Prague.

The selection came close on the heels of a victory by the Moray team at the British championships. That four-strong team included Gault, who lives at Castle Court in Lossiemouth.

As well as highlighting their success, Gault also said that he is hoping more people will join the Moray Wheelchair Curling Club when it starts its weekly sessions again in September.

He said anyone interested should head along to the Moray Leisure Centre in Elgin, from 2pm to 4pm on a Wednesday, where they will be welcomed.
