Moray Province curling latest: Three joint leaders in Division 3 as Charlie Watt junior's long unbeaten run is ended on Moray Leisure Centre ice
There are now three joint leaders in Division 3 of the Moray Province East Curling League.
Long time runaway leader Forres’s Charlie Watt jnr’s crown is slipping as he fell to a 7-4 loss this week.
Having dropped his first point of the season last week, Watt lost his first league game since season 2018/19 to a fired up Bob Stewart.
The Forres team were 4-2 up after four ends before Stewart’s rink dominated the last three ends for a memorable victory.
Earlier in the week the Stewart combo picked up another valuable point in their 6-6 draw with the Ballindalloch Kennedy clan. A fine week’s work for the Elgin skip sees him climb to joint league leader.
It was a good week too for the Moray Junior Club as Georgia Clarke’s 8-5 win over Linda Hardie moved her into a share of top spot and Owen Watson was in good form with a solid 7-4 win over Helen Downey. A four at end two was the deciding factor in this match.
In Division 2 the bottom of the table clash was won convincingly by Andrew Allardyce .
The Elgin rink are in a rich vein of form and completely overwhelmed their Darnaway opponents.The Milne rink only managed two consolation singles and are now cemented to the league basement.
Dave McPherson’s Tennis Club team are also faltering having now lost their last two games.
A performance of Olympic proportions by Bill Jaffrey’s Fochabers rink saw the league leaders fall to a 9-3 loss. The villagers' skip Wilson Burnett might not spend as much time in the gym as Team GB's Bruce Mouat, but he was in excellent form as he pulled his team to within two points of McPherson’s table toppers.
In the West, Division 2 has developed into a two horse race between Nairn clubmates Angus Forbes and Jamie Cattell.
Forbes holds the advantage courtesy of a comprehensive 8-0 win over Ricky Marwick, but Cattell’s win over Fiona Steel’s Ladies keeps his team right on Forbes’s heels.
Meanwhile the terrific coverage of GB curlers at the Winter Olympics seems to have stimulated great interest in the Try Curling sessions at Moray Leisure Centre.
There has been a very encouraging number of new curlers “having a go” at this great sport, and details of further sessions can be found on the Moray Province Curling website.
