Moray fighters score double success

TWO Moray fighters secured wins at one of the top amateur MMA events on the calendar.
The Art of Combat competition at The Alhambra Arena, Dunfermline, saw two of the most anticipated fights on the card feature Elgin fighters Euan “Ginge’ Macleod versus Dean Elliot of Port Glasgow and the former promotion featherweight champion Aidan Stephen up against Simon Kelly of Edinburgh in the co-main event of the evening.
Both fighters were fresh from impressive performances only five weeks earlier at Caledonian Combat in Inverness. With two wins to his name and a growing fan base, Macleod cuts an impressive figure at 62kg and is proving a handful to deal with, as Elliot was to discover in an enthralling three round war.
Macleod immediately made his intentions known in the first round, making Elliot feel his power.
The Port Glasgow man proved resilient and returned fire with flurries of combinations and a takedown.
A very competitive back and forth battle bout showcased every element of the sport, with both fighters working on the feet and on the mat.
MacLeod’s conditioning at Ally Saville Studio & Gym made the difference though as he summoned the energy in the third round to come out on top and seal the decision victory in a fight of the night performance described by co-promoter Steven Clark as “one of the best fights he’s ever put on”.
In the co-main event, Aidan Stephen calmly disposed of his opponent in just 28 seconds of the first round.
Stephen slipped the right hand of Kelly, countered with his own leg kick and a takedown, calmly taking his opponent’s back in the process and sinking in the choke, forcing his opponent to tap out.
This was an impressive ninth victory for Stephen and he celebrated with his trademark back somersault from the top of the cage.
In other team news, Martin Donaldson picked up a silver medal in his division at the Scottish Brazilian Jiu Jitsu open in Edinburgh.
