MORAY amateur Kyle Godsman narrowly missed out on a place in next week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

The 25-year-old Hopeman golfer was leading at one stage of Sunday’s Scottish Open qualifier on his home Moray course.

But a bogey on 17 proved costly for Godsman as he finished with a one under par total of 141.

Rowallan Castle golfer Jack Doherty won the 36-hole qualifier on four under, a shot clear of Gareth Wright (West Linton), Peter Whiteford, Alastair Forsyth and Kris Nicol (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), who won the other four places for next week’s European Tour event at Castle Stuart.

Godsman had been leading on four under after 6 holes but bogeys on 7, 11 and 17 saw him slip just below the qualifying mark.

“Obviously I’m a bit disappointed to lose out by a couple of shots,” said Godsman. “But it’s been a good experience.

“On 17 I tried to be a little bit too cute (with a bunker shot) but I thought I needed a birdie and a strong finish, and I made a bogey instead.”

Former Open champion Paul Lawrie was at the Lossiemouth links to offer support for his son Craig in the qualifier.

Young Lawrie had a personal highlight when he holed his tee shot at the 15, his first competitive ace, having double bogeyed the previous hole.

But like Godsman, Lawrie finished on one under and in a share for ninth place.

Grantown-on-Spey’s Gavin Hay was even closer to qualifying as a storming 68 in Sunday’s second round saw him miss out by just a shot on two under.

Forres golfer Jeff Wright finished on +3, two shots ahead of Moray golfer and Kilmacolm professional Michael Patterson and Rodger Clark from Lossiemouth’s Golf Dedication Centre.

Ex-Moray golfer and Peterculter pro Ross McConnachie, Elgin pro Michael McAllan and Moray’s Derek Ramsay all finished on ten over.
