AN Elgin martial arts club received a visit from a Team GB Olympic coach and former Olympian this week.

On Monday, March 18, Sansum Martial Arts welcomed Martin Stamper, London 2012 Olympian, to meet his former team mate Damon Sansum in Moray.

Damon is himself a former Olympic team player and double World Games medallist. He now serves as the Director of Performance at Sansum Martial Arts.

On his visit north, Martin Stamper attended training sessions in Lossiemouth and at the Moray Sports Centre in Elgin.

Impressed by the level of talent and the engagement of the youth, he said: "Damon and I are very good friends, and I had the honor of coaching Damon during his last few years which really cemented our friendship.

"We have been closely following Damon’s success in Moray after leaving the GB team, and I am really impressed with the amount of young people engaging in his clubs and also the amount of talent he has developed."

Damon Sansum, who has travelled worldwide representing Great Britain, made the decision to return to Moray to inspire local athletes rather than pursue coaching opportunities with the Olympic team.

He said: "Team GB have been closely watching my young team's performance here in Moray. I was delighted when Martin wanted to come up and take a look at the work we have been doing here."

Sansum Martial Arts, under the guidance of Damon and his father, Master Lee Sansum, boasts schools in Forres, Dufftown, Kinloss, and Keith.

Master Lee Sansum expressed his pride in seeing Damon's hard work recognised and highlighted the dedication of the coaching team, including development coaches Stuart Williams and Fraser King, in nurturing young talent.

Sansum Martial Arts offers a welcoming environment for children seeking to explore martial arts. Those interested in joining this vibrant community are encouraged to contact Kate Sansum on 07775918070 or visit the Sansum Martial Arts website.
