MORAY Rugby Club will be aiming to secure the Tennent's Caledonia North Region Division 2 title when they take to the field at Morriston on Saturday.

After 13 successive victories in the league, the Elgin-based side have the chance to wrap up the league title with a game to spare this weekend when they host RAF Lossiemouth.

With two games left to play, both at home, Moray will clinch the title – and promotion to Caledonia Region Division 1 – with a victory against their local rivals, who they defeated 48-7 in their last outing.

Moray have lost just one game all season – the very first match of the campaign – and have a seven-point gap over second place Highland Raptors, who also have two games left to play.

Cameron Hughes, first team coach, said: “This weekend is a fantastic opportunity to do something that we haven't done as a rugby club for well over a decade.

"We have worked incredibly hard on and off the field to get ourselves into this position and it is one of those occasions that makes you remember why you give up your evenings and Saturdays to play rugby.

"RAF Lossiemouth will be a tough nut to crack, they are a physical, well-organised squad and we will have to be at our best to get it over the line.”

Saturday's match at Morriston Playing Fields starts at 3pm, with members of the public welcome and encouraged to attend.

If the title is not sewn up against RAF Lossiemouth – who are fifth of nine in the North Region Division 2 with six wins and six defeats – then there will be another chance to do so on Saturday, April 15, when Mackie visit Elgin.

Marc Higgins, club captain, added: “This season has been fantastic so far, we want to keep the momentum going and finishing with two home games is exactly what you want given our current league position.

"The game plan has been massively bought into by the team and we just love getting out there and enjoying ourselves."

The first team at Moray Rugby Club are not the only side with the opportunity of success this weekend.

On Sunday, Muntly Under 16s (who have players from Moray, Huntly and Banff) are playing Perthshire Under 16s in the final of the Inspiresport Under 16 Caledonia Conference Cup in Inverness.

It has been a very good season for the Muntly Under 16s, who will also contest the Caledonia Under 16s Shield final, again with Perthshire Under 16s as the opponents.

Muntly Under 18s also have the opportunity of silverware in the Under 18 Caledonia Plate Final when they take on Ellon Under 18s. Both the Saltire Energy U16 Shield and U18 Plate finals will take place on April 2.
