Glasgow High Kelvinside captain Cameron Hughes, who started his rugby career with the Elgin outfit, will take on the new position starting on Monday.

Created in partnership with Gordonstoun School, the job is supported by the Scottish Rugby governing body.

It is intended to further the development of long-term community participation of rugby for male and female players in the Moray area.

Hughes will lead a community and schools engagement programme tasked with delivering targeted sessions in cluster secondary and primary schools and through a series of club and community events.

As a player with Moray RFC, Hughes progressed from mini to under-18 rugby, representing the Caledonia region at every age group as well as getting the opportunity to train with Scotland under-17s and Wales under-18s.

To further his playing career, he moved to Welsh Premier Division semi-professional side RGC1404 before moving back to Stirling County then Glasgow High Kelvinside.

Moray Rugby Club president Fraser Andrews said: “The appointment of a Moray RFC development officer is a great coup for the club and congratulations go to Cameron Hughes who was a great candidate and showed a complete willingness and drive to grow the game here in Moray.

"I would also like to thank the SRU Caledonia North team, headed by Rudi Urbach for their encouragement and support in taking this major step."

Urbach is regional director at Scottish Rugby and he said of the appointment: “The Caledonia North Regional management team are delighted to be growing our investment into grassroots rugby across the north through programmes like these.

"Moray Rugby Club are strong advocates of our cultures, values & behaviours and, like rugby clubs across our region, work tirelessly to support their communities offering meaningful opportunities for people to develop both on and off the field of play by providing safe, inclusive and positive environments.”

Doug Cooper, head of rugby and sports coach at Gordonstoun, added: "Gordonstoun is looking forward to working with Cameron both in helping us improve our delivery of rugby at the school but also enhancing our relationships with the wider school community in Moray.

"We would also like to thank Scottish Rugby and Rudi for the support provided.”
