Local rink stars Jim Gault and Gregor Ewan were part of a five-man Scotland team who swept to victory in the 5th Danish International event in Scandinavia.

The Scots entered two teams, while there was stern competition from the likes of Russia, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Norway. But Jim and Gregor’s team battled through to the final, where they beat the Czech Republic 10-5 to secure the gold medal.

The Czechs all but ended Scotland’s European Championship football hopes with a controversial late penalty at Hampden recently, so revenge was sweet for the Scots on the curling rinks of Denmark.

Their team, with Mike McCreadie as skip and Gregor as spare, also included Jim, Gill Keith and Ian Donaldson, and was led by new coach Tony Zummack.

Gregor revealed how he took over at third midway through the third game when Jim came off after pulling a muscle in his shoulder, but it failed to knock the team out of their flow as they went on to complete a comfortable win.

The Moray pair have a hard year of curling ahead, with the next competition being the Kinross International at the end of this month.

Following that they will head out to Bern, Switzerland, aiming to make a flying start to the international season.

Moray Wheelchair Curling Club is always looking for new players. The curling season began on September 19, and anyone interested in playing the sport in a wheelchair can call Gregor Ewan on 07707 875629.
