Olympic dream for Elgin-born triathlete
ELGIN-born Olympic hopeful Helen Jenkins has received a major sponsorship boost ahead of London 2012.
The 2008 World Triathlon Champion has been selected by family baker Warburtons as part of an Olympic sponsorship package.
Jenkins (27), who now lives and trains in Bridgend, Wales, was born in Elgin and spent her early years in Moray as her father was in the RAF.
For the last six years she has been competing on a World stage, the highlight coming three years ago when she was crowned International Triathlon Union World Champion, and she also competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Warburtons is sponsoring five Olympic hopefuls as part of its ‘Rise to a better you’ campaign.
Jenkisn said: "Getting to compete at the Olympics in my own country would be a dream come true for me and I am thrilled to have the backing of Britain’s favourite family baker. I’m looking forward to showing everyone just what I can do."
Jonathan Warburton, chairman of her new sponsors, said: "Warburtons has recognised the passion Helen has for triathlons and we are proud and excited to have the opportunity to support British talent by sponsoring Helen, and four other British athletes."
After progressing through the ranks in Wales, she had a few seasons blighted by injury before winning the World Championships and competing at Beijing.
"My biggest inspiration at the moment is the London Olympics, I really want to be there.
Jenkins trains for up to 30 hours a week, which includes five swim sessions, up to five bike sessions, around seven runs and two gym sessions.
