FORMER Open champ and Ryder Cup star Paul Lawrie says Moray is a hotbed of “brilliant” golf courses and a great area for his sport to be played.

The Aberdonian spoke to ‘The Northern Scot’ after presenting the prizes at Moray Golf Club for a junior tournament run by his own charity foundation.

The Paul Lawrie Junior Jug drew 72 of the best young golfers in Scotland and beyond to the Lossiemouth links, with some top class play produced by a field of under-18-year-olds.

Lawrie is no stranger to Moray, having played there during his own junior days as well as being an honorary member at nearby Hopeman Golf Club, where he rates its signature ‘Prieshach’ 12th hole as one of his favourite par 3s in the world.

“Having spent a lot of time at Hopeman growing up, I was a regular on these links and have lots of good memories of playing here and learning links golf on the Moray courses, as well as some of the other local venues,” said Lawrie.

He said Lossiemouth’s New and Old courses, as well as Hopeman and Elgin, are four very good golf courses all within a relatively short distance of each other.

“This coastline has some brilliant golf courses dotted along it,” he said. “Being here this week has reminded me again just how good it is.”
