Borough Briggs was treated to a nine-goal thriller in the Scottish Women's Football League Cup on Sunday.

Elgin City Women played host to Inverurie Locos in their fourth group match of the competition.

Locos had defeated City 2-1 when the teams met for the first time in their section on August 20.

Another close encounter was expected and that turned out to be the case as both teams went on the attack.

Sarah Westwood gave Mike Morrison's Elgin team a dream start with an early goal which was quickly cancelled out by Aoife Gauld's equaliser.

Back came the home side within a couple of minutes to regain their advantage through Lauren Doherty.

Inverurie then found another gear, levelling ten minutes later through Sofia Ross then grabbing a half time lead when Courtney Shirran fired home.

A fourth Locos goal by Louise Proctor seemed to put the game beyond Elgin but they battled away to reduce the deficit through Abi Hayes.

Late in the game, Sophie Jamieson made it 5-3 to the visitors but Abi Kennedy quickly netted for Elgin to set up a nervy finale for Locos, who managed to hold on for a 5-4 victory.

As well as narrowly losing twice to Inverurie, Elgin were defeated by the odd goal in a 4-3 loss to Grampian Ladies.

They were awarded a victory in their home group match against Buchan Ladies two weeks ago, as their opponents couldn't fulfil the fixture.

City are back in league action on Sunday when they play host to Arbroath in the SWFL North.

They won their opening fixture 10-1 against Dryburgh Athletic, before losing 5-4 at home to Buchan Ladies.
