Forres Mechanics recovered from a slow start to give Elgin City a test in Friday's Fraser testimonial match.
Cans manager Steven MacDonald said he feared the worst when Elgin scored twice and missed a penalty inside the opening 15 minutes.
But he was pleased with his team's recovery in an eventual 3-0 defeat.
The Moray derby was played as a benefit match to Graham and Lee Fraser, who have played for Mechanics since 2010.
An early Darryl McHardy header and a Kane Hester tap-in put City 2-0 ahead, and Brian Cameron fired a penalty kick over the bar.
Play was more even particularly in the second half and Elgin added just one more goal through sub Josh Peters' 80th minute header.
"Elgin were miles better at the start and really sharp, they looked at a different level for a while," said MacDonald.
"I feared for a minute that it could be a bit of a hiding.
"Thankfully we got it together and maybe they took the foot off the pedal.
"It’s our first proper game on the park so I was quite pleased that we didn’t capsize totally and I thought our fitness levels were quite good.
"We kept the ball better in the second half and did a lot better apart from switching off for the one goal.
"The point of it was to get a competitive game against a side that’s better than us, we worked hard and didn’t disgrace themselves."
Forres had former Buckie Thistle player Lucas Davidson on trial at left back.
