Dundee-based Gibson will step down this month due to the strain of travel commitments, but will help groom his successor gradually into the job.

Price is understood to be seeking a north-based replacement to assist him in handling the geographical split in his squad.

Former Brora Rangers manager Steven MacKay was spotted at Elgin’s 3-0 win over Albion Rovers on Saturday, heightening speculation that the former City player could fit the bill to take on the position.

MacKay managed Brora to back-to-back Highland League title triumphs and a famous Scottish Cup win over Hearts this year, but left the role following a 6-2 defeat at Fraserburgh earlier this month.

Price wouldn’t be drawn on the identity of his new man, but said he will be in place for tomorrow’s home match against Forfar Athletic.

He praised the support given to him by Gibson, who filled the position vacated by Price when he succeeded JimWeir as Borough Briggs boss in 2017.

“It’s been three-and-a-half years, and we’ve had a good working relationship, so it’s a big blow for me that he’s leaving from a personal pint of view,” he said.

“But I can understand it’s been a big ask for him doing his many miles over the years, and I can understand that for family reasons that he’s had his fill of driving up that road.

“The good thing is that we have done it the right way.

"He has given me plenty time to sort things out and I’ve known for a wee while that this is going to happen, so it’s given me the opportunity to have a seamless transition, which it will be.

“I know what is going to be happening with somebody else coming in, so it is a transition which the players will know about.

“The new person is going to be shadowing Keith for a couple of weeks, then will take over in his own right.”
