A RANGERS ‘legends’ team containing favourites like Lorenzo Amoruso and Andy Goram won a charity match in Elgin on Sunday in front of a 1500 crowd.

Stephen Bruce's overhead kick opened the scoring, as Rangers legends Lorenzo Amoruso (second right) and Scott Nisbet look on.

Amoruso scored the ‘Gers opening goal while striker Gordon Durie netted two exquisite lobs as the Ibrox team beat a Highland League Legends XI 6-2.

There was a big thrill for Buckie-based Rangers fan Garry Geddes when he came on as substitute and scored the sixth goal for his favourite team.

Garry has his arm amputated after falling under a train coming back from a recent Rangers match, and was given the chance to lead out his heroes before the match.

“When I heard everybody cheering away, I was almost embarrassed,” Garry said. “It was a great moment, and having all the players coming up to congratulate me was special.”

Fellow supporter Iain Walker, a Moray man serving in the army in Cambridgeshire, also scored in the match after successfully bidding for a place in the Rangers team in an auction.

One of the stars of the show was former Scotland international keeper Goram, who had a spell with Elgin towards the end of his career.

Goram joked after the match that it was the first time he had been on a winning side at Borough Briggs.

“I had a few saves to make, but some of the other guys showed they still had the class. When you get to our age the legs don’t work as well but the ability never leaves you.

“It was a great day in front of a good Elgin crowd, and I hope it’s made plenty money for charity.”

Proceeds from the match, which was organised by local businessmen Dave Carson and David Guidi, will go to a number of good causes in the Moray area.

Current Buckie Thistle striker Stephen Bruce put the Highland League team ahead with an overhead kick past Goram, but Amoruso levelled within ninety second with a free kick.

Charlie Miller hit the post with a penalty before Gary McSwegan tapped in Rangers second, and supporter Iain Walker cracked home number three before the break.

Durie chipped a 30 yard effort into the top corner, and added another with a neat lob shortly after Elgin City manager Ross Jack netted the north team’s second goal.

Perhaps the loudest cheer of all came when 21-year-old Geddes came off the bench and scored within two minutes of coming on, coolly slotting home after rounding keeper Stevie Dunn.

Stars like Derek Ferguson and Scott Nisbet rolled back the years as Rangers proved too strong for a Highland League team which included current north players like Graeme Grant, Mike Morrison and Neil Whyte.

Former Elgin City favourites Neil McLennan and Davie Mone also put their boots back on for the occasion on their old stomping ground.
