A BATTLING Rothes display couldn't halt Cove Rangers' charge towards the Highland League title.

Cove beat the Speysiders 2-0 on Monday night to go six points clear at the top of the league, with three games in hand over second-placed Inverurie.

Just two days after thrashing Fort William 12-2 the league leaders were back in action as they face a heavy run of fixtures to complete their league campaign before a possible SPFL play-off match.

Cove took the lead midway through the first half when striker Paul McManus beat Rothes keeper Darren McConnachie to a high ball and nodded home.

Early in the second half Mitch Megginson scored his 47th goal of the season from the penalty spot after he had been fouled by Rothes defender Stephen Rennie.

Dale Wood and Dan Moore missed first half chances for the Speysiders, who drew a blank for the third match running.

In Saturday's league matches, Lossiemouth suffered late heartache as they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Strathspey Thistle.

Leading 2-1 through goals by Scott Dunn and Ross Archibald with just a minute to go, they were stunned when Jags' James McShane levelled with his second goal of the game then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time.

The win took Strathspey above Keith, whose home game with Nairn was postponed.

Buckie Thistle and Forres Mechanics drew 1-1 at Victoria Park with Stevie Ross' 49th minute strike cancelling out Graham Fraser's Forres opener.

Mechanics keeper Stuart Knight saved a Kai Ross penalty with ten minutes to go.

Forres host Inverurie Locos on Wednesday night while Keith, who have dropped to second bottom, pay a visit to Turriff United.

Cove are home to Strathspey, Brora meet Wick, Fraserburgh take on Formartine and Fort William make the trip to Nairn in the other Wednesday night games.
