THE stars of this week’s Ryder Cup could do worse than consult Moray Golf Club head professional John Murray to pick up tips on how to play the Gleneagles course.
For Murray used to be senior golf pro at the luxurious Perthshire golf resort, and knows many of the nooks and crannies of its PGA Centenary course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
Now pro at the Lossiemouth links in his native Moray, he is relishing his return to Gleneagles as a spectator to watch the drama of his sport’s greatest event unfold amidst its breathtaking Scottish scenery.
Murray’s memories of his eight-year stint at the resort, which also hosts Scotland’s PGA National Golf Academy, are highly cherished, and he predicts his old workplace will host a spectacular sporting occasion this week.
“It’s always got a special place in my heart as my first place of work really,” he said. “It will be nice to go down there and have good knowledge of the course and pick out some of the good areas to stand and watch some of the golf,
“The whole occasion should be fantastic, for Scotland and for everyone down there working as part of the team.”
Born in Elgin, and a member both at Hardhillock and Moray in his youth, he gained an Honours degree in Leisure and Recreation Management before landing a summer job at Gleneagles.
