THE Northern Counties Women’s Golf Association welcomed one of its highest quality entries to its 2016 championship at Brora Golf Club last weekend.

And there was a big win for Elgin golfer Sarah Westwood (14), who put in a fine performance across the two days to win the handicap competition.

In winning the title, Westwood defeated last year’s winner Ellie Docherty (17), also from Moray.

Westwood is an all round sports girl already excelling in badminton, tennis and girl’s football. Only this year did she turn her full attention to golf and was given a handicap of 18.

She was a big semi-final winner over Fiona Hampton (Royal Dornoch) to meet Kerry Williamson from Wick in the final of the Chetham Handicap Trophy.

What a start the Elgin girl had, winning the first five holes with figures belying her handicap, and had she been facing either of the scratch finalists she would have been ahead.

Almost twice her opponent’s age, Williamson slowly made inroads into her deficit and brought the score back to one hole after 12.

The Wick member, handicap 14, faltered by going into the burn at the 13th hole allowing the Elgin teenager to hold on and win 2&1 four holes later with a nett four at the 17th.

Westwood was just one of 66 golfers who took to the course in Brora for the scratch and handicap competitions, of which 18 had single-figure handicaps.

From the scratch cut to eight players, who went into match-play for the Mary Benton Challenge Cup, Hannah McCook from Grantown on Spey who carries a handicap of +1 and the defending scratch handicapped champion Cara Thomson from Royal Dornoch met in the final.

McCook won the last two holes to finish champion for a second time.

McCook began the championship as number one seed after Saturday’s qualifying round then despatched her first two match-play opponents, which included Carinne Taylor from Elgin, 4 and 3.

From that moment, there was no stopping her to the title.
