The Challenge Cup could be scrapped this season to ease the pressure on the fixture list during the 2020/21 campaign.
It has been reported in a national newspaper that the SPFL have written to clubs in the lower three divisions, including Elgin City.
They have asked if they can afford to compete in the competition without fans being allowed into grounds.
It was reported that clubs have been given until lunchtime today to respond with a decision expected to be made this afternoon.
Neither the SPFL nor the SFA commented yesterday at the time of going to press.
In a radio interview earlier this year, SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster says they were hopeful that the competition would go ahead.
However, it was unlikely teams from England, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland would participate.
It is not known when, or if, last season’s Challenge Cup final between Caley Thistle and Raith Rovers will take place.
Caley Thistle were aiming to win the trophy for the second time in three years after beating Dumbarton 1-0 in the 2018 final.
Ross County won the trophy in 2019 when they beat Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads.
The Challenge Cup is a competition for teams in the Championship, League One and League Two as well as the top four clubs from the Highland League and the Lowland League.
Colts teams from Premiership Clubs, including Ross County are also eligible to participate.
