ELGIN City defeated Championship side Alloa Athletic in a penalty shoot-out in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday.

A penalty save by Tom McHale earned Elgin City's Betfred Cup win at Alloa.
A penalty save by Tom McHale earned Elgin City's Betfred Cup win at Alloa.

The Black and Whites triumphed 6-5 on spot kicks after a 3-3 draw at the Indodrill Stadium.

It was City's first win in the competition in three years after ten straight defeats, and they earned two points in their group stage as a result.

Keeper Tom McHale was the Elgin hero, saving Alloa's seventh penalty in sudden death to clinch the visitors' win.

Injury-hit City drafted in recent signing Kyle Willis for his first start and played James McGowan at centre back, with Andy McDonald and Darryl McHardy both sidelined.

Russell Dingwall netted his first competitive goal for Elgin since his summer move from Ross County with a superb free kick to give the League 2 side a surprise half time lead.

There was a flurry of goals at the start of the second half, with Alan Trouten levelling for the home side only for Shane Sutherland to crack in a right footer and restore Elgin's lead within a minute.

Almost immediately, Liam Buchanan forced in a close range effort to make it 2-2.

Alloa looked on course for the three points when Kevin Cawley edged them in front for the first time on 75 minutes.

However with two minutes left, City centre back Stephen Bronsky headed home, and the away side clung on under pressure to force the shoot-out.

Both clubs scored all five of their spot kicks, with Dingwall, Conor O'Keefe, Sutherland, Rory MacEwan and Bronsky all finding the net for Elgin.

It looked bleak for the visitors when Aiden Sopel's sudden death kick was saved, but Alloa's Cawley then fired wide with his opportunity to win the match.

Elgin's Matthew Cooper, who missed in a sudden death Irn Bru Cup shoot-out against Arbroath last term, kept his nerve to net his team's seventh kick.

McHale then saved from Andy Stirling to seal the Moray club's victory.

City were defeated 2-1 at Arbroath on Saturday in their opening group game. Sutherland had given them the lead before Arbroath hit back for victory, scoring the winner in stoppage time.

Elgin captain Darryl McHardy dislocated his shoulder in the match, ruling him out of action for at least six weeks.

His vice captain Brian Cameron is out for a similar length of time due to a knee injury picked up in a friendly at Clach the week before.

This weekend Elgin are at home to Stirling Albion in their third group fixture, before finishing with a home clash against Hibernian the following Friday night, live on BT Sport.

The City v Hibs clash is all ticket, with briefs for the match on sale at Borough Briggs during office hours Monday to Friday, priced £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

Stand tickets are already sold out.
