GIVE me more money and I can take you to Division 2 and beyond, Ross Jack has told Elgin City’s board.
The Borough Briggs manager has admitted he is stalling on signing a new three-year contract until the club matches his ambitions with an increase in cash.
Jack says he believes he is worth an improved deal, and has urged chairman Graham Tatters to find him a bigger budget to boost the team’s promotion chances this term.
But Tatters has cited a drastic cut in Scottish League grant cash and increased bonus money being paid out City’s players as key factors in the club’s difficulty in meeting their manager’s demands.
Jack said he was “not a million miles” away from reaching an agreement on a new deal, with his current contract due to expire at the end of this season.
Now Elgin’s longest-serving Scottish League manager, Jack has taken the team from the bottom of Division 3 into a challenging play-off position, and helped to attract bigger crowds to Borough Briggs.
“I’m ambitious and I want to manage at the highest level that I can. If it’s with Elgin that’s great – if it’s somewhere else, then so be it,” Jack said.
“With Elgin City every penny is a prisoner. I know that, but I’ve got a value that I think I’m worth and I don’t think we’re far away.
Chairman Tatters said his board is doing all they can to hold on to Jack and his assistant Barry Wilson, but admitted there are obstacles to overcome if they are to reach an agreement.
“We’re not stupid, we want Ross to stay and there’s no debating about it,” Tatters told “The Northern Scot”. “There’s no point having a coaching team with their stature and experience when you can’t supplement it with a good playing squad. So it’s a balancing act and we’re just trying to get that right.
