Buoyed by their latest signing, Lossiemouth finally took the scalp of a Highland League top six side on Saturday.

The Coasters pulled off their result of the season by defeating Inverurie Locos 1-0 at Grant Park.

Locos, with new manager Andy Low at the helm, played second fiddle to a home side with a spring in their step according to interim boss Ian Campbell.

With Lossie completing the signing of ex-Fort William and Strathspey Thistle midfielder Darren Brew before the game, Campbell believes his new addition may have added some impetus to his side.

“He is a player we have taken in to give us competition and the midfield certainly seemed to step up a bit on Saturday,” he said. “Whether it was because of Darren coming in or not I don’t know.

“We have been looking at Darren for a while. He was at Fort William and every time we played us, he impressed. He’s a good, strong player.

“We did speak to him but we thought he had returned to London and then he appeared at Strathspey. He was under contract but he went away back down to London at Christmas then came back up the road and he was keen to come to us.”

Brew was on the Lossie bench last week for their win over Locos, earned by Niall Kennedy’s first half penalty.

Niall’s brother Jared was sent off late in the game with Locos’ Rob Ward following in stoppage time.

Campbell said his team fully merited all three points.

“It was a good performance and we have deserved one of these for a while,” he said. “Everything went our way for a change.

“In the first half they were hardly in our half but when you play these good teams you wonder if you have been very good or they have played poorly.

“They had chances late on but we were on top in the first half and had a few chances, some clearances off the line then we got the penalty and Niall Kennedy slotted it away no problem.

“We thought we might get camped in after the break but both teams had periods of the game and it was a good team performance from us. The boys stood up for themselves, didn’t get bullied and showed a lot of determination and guts to get it over the line.

“Every player that started and came on for us was excellent. To win games like that we need nine out of ten from everybody, you can’t have anyone dipping too far below that.

“It was the first time we have beaten a top six team this season and what we have to do now is be consistent and not go to Huntly next week and drop our levels.”

Lossie were beaten 4-1 at home to Huntly this season so will go to Christie Park on a revenge mission.
