ELGIN professional Kevin Stables has teed up a new challenge in his career.

Stables will bid farewell to the Hardhillock club after 12 seasons as club professional.

The former European Tour player and Tartan Tour order of merit winner has been appointed regional development manager for Foremost Golf, the UK’s largest golf retail group.

His new role will, ironically, give him more time to play golf at Elgin in the future.

He will cover Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland from his home base in Elgin.

"There will be a lot of travelling through the week, but there will be time for the family, golf and maybe some football or rugby at the weekends," said Stables.

"I have been a pro for 32 years and, apart from holidays, I have worked every weekend.

"I might be able to play a round of golf on a Saturday morning and go to watch Elgin City or the rugby at Morrison in the afternoon."

Foremost Golf has a network of more than 1,000 professionals across the UK and a number of club groups.

"They are the biggest in the UK and possibly one of the biggest in the world. I am looking forward to the challenge," he added.

Stables has been awarded honorary membership of Elgin Golf Club for his efforts over the years.

Elgin-born Stables, who turned professional in 1979, took up his first head pro job at Ranfurly Castle in April 1986.

After more than four years there he moved to Montrose where he spent 11 years before returning to Elgin.

The new professional at Elgin will be Michael McAllan, who is currently assistant professional at Glenbervie.

Stables’ assistant, Daniel Main, will remain at the helm of the club shop in the meantime.
