A BAD start led to Elgin City's first defeat in seven weeks as they went down 2-1 at Stenhousemuir.

Kane Hester's first half strike gave City hope after they conceded two early goals but the Black and Whites couldn't find an equaliser.

Elgin manager Gavin Price handed a debut to centre back Aldin El-Zubaidi with Darryl McHardy on the bench.

Stenny got off to a flyer with Tam Orr's fourth minute opener and the striker doubled his tally on 13 minutes.

City were on the back foot but Hester's 13th goal of the season pulled one back seven minutes before the break.

The home side had Jordan Tapping sent off 20 minutes from time.

However the ten men of the Warriors were awarded a penalty a few minutes later and Orr had the chance to complete his hat-trick but Elgin keeper Tom McHale saved his effort.

Stenny held on for the win which took them into fourth spot, four points ahead of Elgin in eighth.

Bottom side Cowdenbeath won 1-0 at ninth-placed Albion Rovers to close the gap to six points.

Leaders Kelty Hearts bounced back from their defeat at Elgin in midweek as Nathan Austin's last minute strike nabbed a 3-2 win against Stranraer.

Kelty host Elgin next Saturday.
