After bossing Brora Rangers to two Highland League titles and a League Two play-off, the 40-year-old is back at the club he played for in three spells in his younger years.

Manager Gavin Price revealed that MacKay will shadow departing number two Keith Gibson in the assistant's role, beginning with today's home match against Forfar Athletic.

Price said: "The good thing is that we have done it the right way.

"Keith has given me plenty time to sort things out and I’ve known for a wee while that this is going to happen, so it’s given me the opportunity to have seamless transition, which it will be.

"Steven ticks all boxes. He’s a good quality coach and someone with a lot of contacts that’s north-based, so when we had to come to this decision it was always going to be someone from the north.

"It makes more sense for training and helps with the recruitment of players.

"He is going to be shadowing Keith for a couple of weeks and then will take over in his own right."

MacKay said on the club's website: "'I'm delighted to join Elgin City as assistant manager having played here when I was younger.

"It's exciting to be with a club that is part of the Scottish Professional League set-up. I'm looking to support Gavin and the players as much as possible as we look to push for the playoffs and promotions."

Mackay left his position at Brora two weeks ago following a 6-2 league defeat at Fraserburgh.

He led the Cattachs to back-to-back titles as well as a famous Scottish Cup win over holders Hearts earlier this year.

He played for Elgin on loan from first club Ross County during two spells at the start of the 2000s, later joining the club on a permanent basis.
