The 26-year-old is closing in on his best goal tally yet for a single campaign as he looks to beat the nine he netted in the 2018-19 season.

He has been the highest scoring centre back in the Scottish lower leagues over the course of the last decade.

Now in his tenth year in the Black and Whites' first team, McHardy has struck 46 goals from defence and looks on course to hit the half century mark soon.

Only Craig Gunn (138 goals), Shane Sutherland (98), Brian Cameron (84) and Kane Hester (55) have scored more goals for the club in their Scottish League era.

McHardy has played 270 competitive matches for Elgin including 228 starts since making his debut on December 29, 2012 as substitute in a 2-0 loss at Annan.

A stoppage time winner against Forfar Athletic on January 2 was the highlight of the season for McHardy, who also netted a last-minute leveller against Stenhousemuir two weeks earlier.

He has scored two hat-tricks for his home town team, in a 5-4 home defeat to Annan in 2015 and a 3-0 success at Albion Rovers in February 2019.

McHardy also grabbed both City goals in last season's League 1 play-off semi-final at Edinburgh City, with the capital side scoring a last minute winner for a 3-2 aggregate success.
