Elgin Golf Club prospect Andrew Moir (16) was chosen as one of 12 North youngsters to take part in the Grampian Houston junior golf exchange.

The scheme has enabled talented young players from Scotland to get coaching in Texas and compete for scholarships at American universities and colleges.

For Elgin Academy pupil Andrew, it’s his big ambition to gain a golf scholarship on the other side of the Atlantic when he leaves school, and he believes his Houston experience will put him in good stead.

“I was speechless when I found out I was in,” he said. “It took a while to sink in.

“This will kind of go towards if I want to go to university over there. It’s another step towards that and it will be good to see a university over there.

“University in America is maybe something I want to do and hopefully I can get a golf scholarship in the future but I’m into other sports so even any sports scholarship would be good.”

Andrew will follow in the footsteps of European Tour star and former US Amateur Open winner Richie Ramsay in being selected for a Grampian team heading to Texas. The Aberdonian made the same trip more than a decade ago, as did Craig Lawrie, son of former Open champ and Ryder Cup star Paul Lawrie.
