THOMAS Reilly can't believe Elgin City are set to miss out on the play-offs yet again.

The former St Mirren midfielder assumed City had all the credentials to grab a top four place and go for promotion from League 2 this season.

He was denied a late winner in Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Edinburgh City by the post, and the Black and Whites' hopes of catching fourth-placed Stenhousemuir look forlorn.

"It's very, very hard to take when you are in such a good position for a large part of the season then you come away with nothing to show for it at the end of the season," he said.

"I feel we've probably got as strong a squad as we had the year we made the play-offs in my first season here – if not better.

"That's the most frustrating thing. We've probably been playing better football, creating more chances and scoring more goals.

"We've just got to look at ourselves as a team. We concede too many chances, give away too many stupid goals.

"We are a young team but we are good enough. we can never say it's anything to do with experience.

"We've just got to assess it ourselves and look at what has gone wrong within the games."

A year ago Elgin's play-off aspirations were strong two-thirds of the way through the season but they failed to win any of their last 12 league fixtures and slipped out of the reckoning.

City can mathematically still reach this year's play-offs but would have to beat second-placed Peterhead on Saturday then win at leaders Montrose the week after, and still need Stenhousemuir to collapse in their last three games.

"The last two games are going to be very, very tough games," Reilly added.

"We've got a say in who wins the league now and we'll clearly try and win both games and finish the season on a high."
