A missed penalty proved costly as Elgin City crashed to defeat at Montrose on Saturday. Gavin Price's side were beaten 3-0 away to the League 2 leaders.

However the defeat was not as convincing as the scoreline suggests.

Elgin midfielder Brian Cameron had a penalty kick saved at 1-0 in the early moments of the second half.

Montrose had led through Terry Masson's sixth minute finish and added two more after the break through Andrew Steeves and Jamie Redman.

In between, the visitors missed several good chances apart from Cameron's spot kick failure.

Thomas Reilly's deflected free kick hit a post in the first half while Jordan Allan, Cameron and Chris McLeish all had decent openings.

In the Highland League, champions Buckie Thistle bounced back to winning ways with a 4-1 success over Keith.

Midfielder Shaun Carrol struck twice for Jags before Ryan Whelan got one back.

Sam Robertson, one of three players making their debut for Buckie, netted a fine finish to give the home side a 3-1 lead.

Craig Dorrat's header put the seal on the three points for the champs.

Two other Moray teams also beat the weather, with Lossiemouth suffering late heartache at home to Nairn County.

A Harry Noble penalty gave Lossie a half time lead but Nairn levelled through Adam Porritt just after the interval.

Ryan Farquhar restored the home lead but sub Gary Kerr levelled on 76 minutes, and the same player grabbed the winner with a minute to go.

Rothes came back from 2-0 down at Deveronvale to steal a point.

Steven Davidson and Dane Ballard had the Banff side 2-0 up after half an hour, and Vale also struck the bar before the Speysiders fought back into the game.

Player assistant Dan Moore struck a superb free kick to reduce the deficit and the same player equalised with ten minutes to go.

It could have been even better for Rothes as Jaime Wilson twice struck the woodwork either side of Moore's second goal.

Formartine won 3-1 at Clach in the day's only other league game to survive.
