City remain eight points ahead of bottom club Clyde, who lost at Peterhead while Stranraer and Bonnyrigg Rose fought out a draw in their other fixture with a bearing on relegation issues.

It was the Black and Whites’ third visit to the MGM Timber Bayview Stadium this season, and turned out to be their third loss in Methil.

Elgin keeper Tom McHale saved an early Jack Healy strike and watched a Scott Shepherd free kick crash off the bar as the home side pressed for an opener.

They did score midway through the first half when Alan Trouten headed home a Healy cross from the left. with McHale getting a hand to the ball but unable to keep out the unmarked header.

The visitors ended the first half strongly and Michael Dangana wasted a great chance, firing wide with only keeper Allan Fleming to beat.

Fleming then twice denied City striker Robert Jones in quick succession.

In the second half, East Fife were back on top and James Lyon fired over before McHale saved a Healy effort.

The points were sealed on 77 minutes when McHale palmed away sub Ryan Schiavone’s drive but Healy pounced on the loose ball and crossed for Lyon to volley home at the back post.

City have five matches left to play and play host to Spartans on Saturday.
