MacEwan (24) had no hesitation in penning a two-deal deal last week before netting the opener at Forthbank in a win that sealed City's safety.

The result not only guaranteed that the Black and Whites can't finish bottom but took them up to eighth in the league, with MacEwan targeting more places to climb over the remaining two matches of the campaign.

The midfielder came off the bench to ssmash home a volley before Brian Cameron also netted to seal a second win of the season for Elgin at Stirling.

Cameron's goal was initially credited to Matthew Cooper but Stirling Albion TV match highlights below clearly show Cameron's initial effort crossing the line.

MacEwan said he never felt his club was in any danger of the drop back down to Highland League football.

“We were confident we could get points at Stirling, which we did and we are confident playing Cowdenbeath at home (tomorrow) so we never really thought we would finish bottom,” he said.

“But it was good to get it out of the way with a win and a clean sheet.

"I don’t get many goals so it is always good to get one. It was all the better being slightly more important."

"Within the squad we never really thought we were going to finish bottom from the position we were in, I always backed us to get the points we needed.

“I remember when we lost at Cowdenbeath and they really bridged the gap and had three games in hand. I was speaking to some of the other boys saying I always felt we could get more points and get results against top half sides to get us out of the trouble area and that is what has happened.

“Now we are mathematically safe it is good to look up and see how high we can finish.”

MacEwan made his 100th appearance for Elgin last month, though he has had to settle for a place on the sub’s bench in recent weeks.

On signing a contract he added: “I spoke to the gaffer just after Christmas and he asked me what my plans were. I told him that as long as I was in the area, there was no other team I would really want to play for.

“I hadn’t heard from anyone else, not that I was wanting to hear from anyone else and last week I got it sorted so I will be signing on again.

“It feels weird when I see myself as one of the younger players but I guess when you look around the squad we are not that old and having played 100 appearances you would like to think it gives you some experience and some knowledge you can use to help out the younger ones.

“We are hoping this year is a blip. Things haven’t gone our way at important times, we haven’t got important results when we needed them and we have had some sloppy results against teams around us in the table.”
