Former world number 1, German Martin Kaymer has also picked up five shots to go -10, the same gain as Whiteford who holed his tee shot at the 11 and gained three more birdies to go six under by the turn.

By mid morning Irishman Peter Lawrie had moved into pole position with five birdies taking him to -11. Argentinian Ricardo Gonzalez is the biggest mover, an eagle at the 2 helping him to go seven under for the day after 11 and just one behind leader Lawrie.

Big crowds are following Lawrie’s group alongside fellow Scot Martin Laird, who made the turn at -5, and former US Masters champion Phil Mickelson.

But compatriot and Moray favourite Paul Lawrie is struggling to make the projected three under cut although he birdied the 18 – his ninth – to go level par.
