BUCKIE Thistle are aiming to make it a staggering 20 Highland League victories in succession when they welcome Moray rivals Rothes to Victoria Park tomorrow.

The Jags won for the 19th time in a row when they defeated Wick Academy 4-0 at Harmsworth Park on Saturday.

Goals from Max Barry, Lewis MacKinnon, Sam Urquhart and Andy MacAskill gave Buckie a comfortable victory.

However, they remain second in the table, one point behind league leaders Fraserburgh, who beat Deveronvale 5-0.

Tomorrow night’s fixtures might be the most important between now and the end of the campaign – with Fraserburgh making the long midweek trip to take on third-place Brora Rangers, while Buckie host Rothes.

“It will be the biggest set of fixtures if we win and they get beat,” Jags boss Graeme Stewart said.

“But we could get beat and they could win and things could still change before the end of the season.

“Turriff showed with a 1-1 against Fraserburgh that everything is possible. Every game is going to provide pressure and be a nervous one for us, Brora, Brechin and Fraserburgh.

“So I’m not saying this is make or break, but it’s important.”

Stewart was pleased with his side’s 4-0 win at Wick – having said pre-match that he would have taken a scrappy win.

“We’d have taken a 1-0, but the goals in the second made it a bit less stressful,” Stewart added.

“It was a fair result and, if anything, we could have got one or two more. Our keeper never touched the ball in the second half.”

The comfortable nature of the second allowed the Jags to rest Kev Stewart and Sam Urquhart ahead of tomorrow night’s Rothes clash.

“Rothes have beaten us the last two games, in the cup final and 2-0 at their place this season,” Stewart added. “They are one of the best teams in the league, with the most experienced manager and lots of players who have played full-time.

“They’ll still have aspirations to finish second or third so we’ll have to prepare well to get a result.”

Buckie should have Shaun Wood back in the squad tomorrow, with Hamish Munro out for another week.
