Rothes Tennis Club held an eight and under mini-tennis event at Moray Sports Centre where a total of 21 children from Elgin, Forres, Fochabers and the host club took part.
The eights events are played on a badminton-sized court, using portable nets and posts and indoors specialist foam balls. The main hall’s eight badminton courts were in constant use throughout the morning.
The tourney involved a round-robin with four separate groups followed by three knockout sections, entry to which was based on final positions in the round-robin.
The winners of each section were Ruairidh Scott (Rothes), Calleigh McConnell (Elgin), Holly Milne (Fochabers) and Arron Barber (Forres) while the runners-up completed another knockout section.
Barber defeated McConnell 7-4 in the final and Scott won the third place play-off, beating Finlay Ball (Elgin) 7-5. There was also a “playback” competition for those who lost their first-round match.
The winner was Rothes member Maisie Smith, from Dufftown, who won 7-4 against Reuben Steele (Fochabers). In the remaining match Riley Macmillan (Elgin) saw off Holly Milne’s spirited challenge.
Section two included children who came third and fourth in the round-robins. Hudson Dunlop (Fochabers) battled his way through to the final where he got the better of Rothesian Marcus Clark (7-3). Third position was taken by Malaki Kriss-Brown (Forres) who overcame Niki Hommel (Elgin) in a closely contested 7-5 thriller.
In an all-Rothes fight for the Playback, Innes Symon defeated Emily Bruce (7-1). Craigellachie’s Charlie Duckers (Rothes) defeated Benjamin Allan (Fochabers) 7-6 in the last tie.
Section three winner Charlie Moir (Fochabers) defeated Rothes’ Eilidh Coutts from Carron.
The three first-round losers (all Rothes) competed in the playback. Danny McConnachie overcame the challenge of Jack Bremner and Imogen Muir from Aberlour.
