800-metre swim gets Rotary Elgin's Triple Challenge off to the perfect start

ROTARY Elgin's Triple Challenge got off to a flying start with an 800-metre swim in Lossiemouth.

Competitors swam 40 lengths of Lossiemouth Swimming Pool, equating to about half a mile, to kick-start the challenge on Saturday, February 26.

A total of 33 people – including some who have done the swim remotely – have taken part so far.

The first finisher was youngster Morgan Hughes of Elgin Amateur Swimming Club, who came home in a lightning quick 12 minutes 14 seconds.

Rotary president Ian Brodie was in attendance and presented finishers with their medals. He said the group was pleased to see so many people enjoying the event.

"We were delighted at the range of abilities and ages taking part," he said. "Clearly the event appealed to a wide audience.

"Everybody completed their swim with ease and surfaced with broad smiles at the end.

"Lossiemouth Pool is a fantastic facility and Rotary wish to thank them for their flexibility, ease of booking and making everyone feel very welcome.

"I would like to personally add my appreciation and thanks to everyone who participated in this event and to the sponsors, organisers and helpers at the swim who enabled this to take place.

"Well done to all at Moray Firth Triathlon Club supported this event by participating in a timed session during their club night last Tuesday."

Staff at Lossiemouth Swimming Pool were also pleased to see the return of events – with this the first they have hosted since the outbreak of coronavirus in 2020.

The next phase of the Triple Challenge will see competitors cycle 50 kilometres on April 24. There will then be a five-mile run on June 5.

The run will coincide with Rotafest, which is taking place at Cooper Park in Elgin across the weekend of June 4.

Entry remains open for all three events, which can also be completed remotely up until June 5. Competitors who take part remotely can submit times directly to Rotary.
