WHILE staff at Poundland begin the clear up and assessment of the damage at their North Street store in Elgin following Friday's fire, an old photograph has emerged of a previous fire in the same building in the 1950s.

It shows firefighters of the day dealing with a blaze in the building.

And while Friday's blaze at Poundland saw a wide cordon thrown around the area to keep the general public at a safe distance, health and safety regulations in those days were clearly slightly different and a large crowd was able to get close to the fire.

It is not known who took this photo but it came from Peter Brash, a solicitor and member of legal firm Grigor and Young, whose Elgin office is on the same street as Poundland.

Do you know who took the photo, what business was in the building at that time or were you around at the time and can remember the fire?

Meanwhile, a police and fire investigation into the blaze at Poundland is set to get underway this week.

Poundland bosses have pledged to support the authorities to establish the cause of the blaze.

Three members of staff were inside the store just before closing at 6pm when a fire was discovered in one of the aisles.

They were able to help a customer in a wheelchair safely exit the building.

One person needed some treatment for smoke inhalation, otherwise there were no injuries, police have confirmed.
