One of the most ground-breaking and controversial plays of the 1980s is being performed at Elgin Town Hall this month.

The Vagina Monologues, written by American playwright Eve Ensler and first performed in 1988, is a series of stories by and about women. Both poignant and funny, the monologues relay experiences of women as told to the playwright.

Performed around the world since its opening night in New York, Moray’s version is being interpreted by a group of local women. Several members of the cast have reunited from a performance of the monologues at the Town Hall just over 20 years ago.

The play’s director, Ruth Boardman, said Ensler’s seminal work remains as relevant today as it was when first performed.

“It’s sad to realise that the monologues and the stories they portray about women’s struggles are still familiar to us today. Some progress has been made but there is still a long way to go.

“The Vagina Monologues is about reclaiming language that refers to our bodies, but it’s also a celebration of brave, beautiful and unapologetic women. It’s also quite funny in places!”

The performance has attracted sponsorship from a host of local businesses who have provided prizes for a raffle. All proceeds will be donated to Moray Rape Crisis, who will also have a stall in the foyer along with the sale of raffle tickets.

Doors and bar open at 6.45pm on Saturday, March 16.

Curtain goes up at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £9 (£7 cons) are available HERE
