The Bothy Ballads Champion of Champions event is taking place at Elgin Town Hall on Saturday (February 10) at 6.15pm.

Every year, for the past 40 years, the very best north east bothy balladeers have gathered to entertain an audience drawn from all over Moray, Aberdeenshire, old Kincardineshire, Banffshire and Angus.

Competitors earned their place by winning bothy ballad heats in six regions and will sing to take the famous porridge bowl and spoon prize.

This year’s six champions are: Shona Donaldson, the reigning champion (and first female winner); Geordie Murison from Strichen; Joe Aitken from Keith; Moira Stewart from Aberdeen; Paddy Buchanan from Stonehaven; and Allan Taylor from Kirriemuir.

Each performer will a song for entertainment before performing their championship entry before the judge.

Dressing in bothy outfits, they will sing from a stage transformed into an austere bothy.

This year's judge is Robert Lovie, who is well known throughout the region for his own performances and event hosting (including the Braemar Gathering).

Compere Gary Coull is also returning for another year of quality hosting, with top stories, quips and introductions.

Entertainment between acts will be provided by top fiddler Paul Anderson MBE, who is playing two sets.

“It’s a full evening’s entertainment,” Rotary Elgin president Michelle Anderson said.

"For your £18 ticket, you see the best of the north east balladeers and the best fiddler; but we also include a plate of beef stovies at the interval, and a dram.

"What more could you ask for a Saturday night out?”

Rotary Elgin run the ‘Champion of Champions Bothy Ballads Competition’ and have done so for the past 40 years.

They run it to raise money for charities supported by Rotary, and most years they raise over £1,000 to donate, from ticket and raffle sales.

They are assisted by sponsors, including Glen Moray, Crofter’s Neuk; Benzies; Macbeths of Forres; Keith Community Radio; The Northern Scot;

And Town Hall and Rotary volunteers donate hundreds of hours of time in preparing and running the show.
