Building work is now expected to begin later this year to reconnect the seafront town to its East Beach.

Moray's MSP Richard Lochhead said: "I’m absolutely delighted that the plans for the replacement bridge in Lossiemouth have been approved by Moray Council.

"That will now allow this much needed project to progress to the final stages before work begins.

"The closure of the bridge has had a significant impact on Lossiemouth’s economy.

"The local community warmly welcomed the decision by the Scottish Government to fully fund a replacement bridge.

"I have no doubt this latest step forward will be well received by all in Lossiemouth.

"It’s also good to hear that plans are on track for the bridge to be completed by Spring 2022.

"That will see access to the East Beach restored just in time for the summer months."

The new bridge, which will cost £1.8million to construct, is going to be maintained by Moray Council.

"It replaces the old structure which was closed after being deemed unsafe in summer 2019.

Moray's MP Douglas Ross said: "I know this will be welcome news in Lossiemouth for local people wishing to access the East Beach.

"It’s vital news too for local businesses who have seen a downturn in trade.

"The old bridge was well used by local people and visitors alike to access the iconic beach and has been very much missed.

"It is part of the town’s fabric and a vital part of its offering to tourists.

"I’m delighted for the town and campaigners who have fought to get to this stage.

"I'm also very much look forward to seeing the bridge open and providing access to the thousands who will use it each year."

The crossing has been designed by Beaver Bridges.

The firm, which has a base in Glasgow, will also carry out the construction of the 200ft-long bridge.

Yesterday's planning decision was greeted warmly by local councillor James Allan.

Cllr Allan (Heldon and Laich, Conservative) said: "This is welcome news for the people of Lossiemouth who have been fighting for a replacement bridge since the well-used bridge previously accessing the East Beach was closed.

"East beach is a beautiful beach where thousands of people a year enjoyed the summer sun or a crisp winter walk.

"Without access to the beach local shops and restaurants have suffered.

"So seeing the project reach this stage is a real encouragement.

"After all the hard work that has been put in by local people it is great to see the planning approved and we move onto the next stage of construction.

"I want to say a huge thank-you to all those I have spoken to and worked with to get to this stage.

"I look forward to the community continuing to be a part as the project moves forward."
