SUSPICIOUS: Police Scotland confirms it is following "positive lines of enquiry" after declaring fire at Poundland in Elgin as deliberate

POLICE Scotland has confirmed that is is treating the fire at the Poundland store in Elgin as suspicious.

Local Inspector Mark Young said: "We are following positive lines of enquiries."

The fire broke out inside the High Street store around closing time 6pm last Friday, August 12.

A major incident response was put in place by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with up to 50 forefighters there at the peak of the blaze.

Three members of staff were inside the building at the time and they were able to lead a customer in a wheelchair to safety.

Insp Young added: "A joint investigation by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland has now concluded and we’re treating the cause of this fire as suspicious.

"No one was seriously injured as a result with one person being treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance personnel at the scene."
