Robbie Mitchell takes a welcome rest after his gruelling cycle ride.

Robbie Mitchell has smashed the world record for the fastest cycle ride ever around the NC500 tourism route.

The veteran completed the 516-mile route in 29 hours, five minutes and 42 seconds, comfortably beating the previous record of 31 hours, 19 minutes and eight seconds.

Tired but elated, Robbie returned to Inverness in the early hours of this morning after setting out from the Highland capital at midnight the previous day.

The 40-year-old was raising money through the challenge for the Edinburgh Sutherland Association.
